North of Guatemala City lay the Tikal Ruins, the site of what was once a cultural Mecca of ancient times. The great dynasties of Tikal included some of the most famed of kings as well as several queens too.

In 1979, Tikal National Park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for the many offerings that it gave to the world. The technology, the architecture, the very atmosphere are the best reasons that Tikal ruins should be on your list of places to visit in Mayan territory.

Ancient times saw Tikal as the capital of an area that had been conquered and rose from it to become one of the largest urban areas that existed in the already vast Mayan civilizations. It has been said that Tikal is the best known, perhaps the best understood of all Mayan cities, but still ancient mysteries remain in Tikal.

Tikal is among the biggest of the sites that have been extensively explored by archeologists and is considered to be the center of the Mayan civilization in what are the Pre-Columbian times. It was among the most powerful and most often visited kingdoms that existed among the ancient Mayans. The style of architecture is one of the most amazing that you will see in the Maya areas, dating back to nearly the fourth century BC.

Tikal

Tikal is said to have reached the pinnacle of its success between 200 and 900 AD n what was called the Classic period of the Mayan civilizations. During this seven hundred year reign, Tikal literally dominated the Mayan society. They were a force to be reckoned with in military might, in economic growth, and in political structure. There is widespread evidence that envoys from Tikal interacted with other areas all around ancient Meso-America, even so far away as Teotihuacan; a thriving metropolis that existed in the far-off Valley of Mexico.

Around 4 AD Tikal was conquered by that metropolis. The conquest by Teotihuacan seems to indicate the beginning of the end, since no major new monuments were produced after this time, and many of what were their elite and priceless palaces were burned.

Of all of the Maya cities to inhabit the lowlands, Tikal is the most well explored and the most well documented. There are long and extraordinary lists of the rulers, the tombs and the Mayan temples that inhabit the area. No Mayan exploration is complete without a visit to the Tikal ruins to explore again the palaces and temples that have seen centuries of use and centuries of exploration.
