Chichen Itza Ruins
The site was built between 1000 and 1200 AD. Built of course by the Mayans, the major structure here, El Castillo is a Mayan temple that was built to honor Kulkulkan. It is also believed to have been a massive calendar of sorts. The total number of steps that El Castillo has are 365, one stair for each day of the calendar year, while the temple measures about 98 feet tall.
It has been gilded with image of the heads of serpents, each plumed and rising from the pyramid base. In the late evening around sunset on the equinox of spring and fall, it's said that the shadows case a triangle on the platform that makes it appear that the serpent with plumed headdress is moving down the pyramid.
