Dating back 1,500 years ago and up to now, Uxmal continues to provide one of the best looks back at the ancient civilization of the Mayas.
Our Uxmal Tour departs from Merida. This is a full day tour which requires low physical demand and is available everyday of the week.
The highlights of Uxmal tour is the visit to the late-Classic Maya site of Uxmal. Uxmal in Mayan language means “thrice built”. It is deemed to be one of the most complex and beautiful expressions of Puuc architecture. While majority regard it as a major highlight of a Yucatan vacation.
In this gallery you will see the beautiful pictures of Uxmal which is one of the greatest Mayan ceremonial centers wherein the structures are beautifully carved and decorated. For sure you will admire the sight of the pyramid of the Magician, Quadrangle of the Nuns, the Governor’s Palace. In addition, Uxmal is viewed as one of the most beautiful pre-Hispanic archaeological sites on the American Continent, owing to the proportion of its grandiose constructions adorned with fine reliefs, whose precision and elegance until today acquire admiration from its every visitor.
The tallest structure at Uxmal is the massive Magician's Pyramid, or the Pirámide del Adivino which is 35 meters tall. This is also called the Pyramid of the Dwarf. Both names were derived from an interesting legend about a magical dwarf who was hatched from an egg, grew to adulthood in a single day, and built this pyramid in one night.
What makes the pyramid unique among other Mayan structures are its rounded sides, height, and steepness, and the doorway on the opposite (west) side near the top. Smooth plasters that are painted red and having blue accents were the original cover of its limestone core. There are five earlier structures beneath the Magician's Pyramid. Commonly, the Mayas would build new structures on top of old ones at regular intervals.
In this tour, you will also have the chance to visit the Mayan site of Kabah. The Mayan site of Kabah is close to Uxmal and at the same time belongs to the Puuc route. A ceremonial causeway connects Uxmal to Kabah. The ceremonial causeway is actually a raised pedestrian walkway 5 meters wide with ceremonial arches at each end.
Kabah is popularly known for its extraordinary palace; masks of the hook-nosed rain god Chac cover the palace completely. In Maya art, this massive repetition of a single set of elements is extraordinary making it an impressive sight.
Puuc stands for "hilly country" and it is actually the name given to the hills nearby and the predominant style of ancient architecture found in this place.
At the end of the tour you will be taken back to your hotel to enjoy a sumptuous lunch in the Mision Uxmal hotel.
