Flora and the fauna of Quintana Roo

Since 1994, the lovely flora and the fauna of the northern part of the state Quintana Roo have been protected under the Yum Balam Protected Area.

In these pictures, you will see the lush jungle with tall trees which is a haven for a variety of species of wildlife including the jaguar, ocelot, spider monkey and raccoons.  The reserve’s wetlands provide shelter to  diverse tropical birds and reptiles.

Jungle Day Tour

On the first day of your Floating Jungle Tour, you will be picked up from your hotel in the morning to drive to the Yum Balam Protected Area.  You will be taken deeper into the lush jungle by a jungle vehicle.  An expert Mayan guide will guide you as you  explore the area’s wonderful wildlife on foot.

After that you will then arrive to the zip line base wherein you will fly over the tree canopy on 3 different zip lines which is an exciting and amazing way to get a nice view of the nature reserve from an unusual angle.

To continue the tour, you will be on kayaks going to the wetlands of the reserve to explore the phenomenal floating tree.

The picture of the floating tree landscape shows that the tree provides good habitat to attractive orchids and bromeliads, colorful insects, tropical birds and alligators.

The tour also offer a visit to the Maya village called “Solferino” where you will be able to learn more about the importance of involving local communities into wildlife protection.

A delicious Mayan meal to satisfy your palate will be served to you before visiting the community orchid garden, butterfly house and art gallery.

You will be brought back to your hotel after a great and informative day of adventure.
