Muyil which is also known as Chunyaxché was one of the earliest and longest inhabited ancient Maya sites on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.  Long ago, the site was a vital point on the Mayan Caribbean trade route because it is situated on the lagoons of what is now called Sian Ka’an Rerserve.  It was also accessible during the early times by means of a series of canals that connected the site with mainland Mayan sites like Coba as well as the Caribbean Ocean.

Tour of Muyil

On the first day of the tour, you will be learning about the traditional medicine guided by the Mayan medicine man who has acquired his knowledge from his ancestors after which you will be guided through a Mayan purification ritual.

Next comes the exciting part which is the visit to ruins of Muyil wherein you will be climbing a 51 feet tall temple with amazing views on the lush jungle around it.  And lead by the lush jungle trail towards the observation tower, you will be able to see the Sian Ka’an Reserve and also its wonderful lagoons and jungles. Traverse the ancient Mayan commercial aquatic routes or canals that connect the crystalline waters of several lagoons by boat. You will also get to visit the small ruin of Maya called the Xlapak.  This ruin was built at the heart of the lagoon. You can jump off the boat, enjoy swimming and float down the canal along with the current.  By the end of the tour, you will have the savor and enjoy a delicious Mexican meal.
