The Tour
This night tour invites you to the unique opportunity to come and see marine turtles lay their eggs and/or release new born turtles on the beach!
The tour starts at around 6 pm when you are being picked up from your hotel. You will be driven to the project center where a brief explanation about marine turtles will be given by an experienced biologist. You will further be transferred to the release/nesting beach. From June to September we can see the female turtles lay their eggs and you will join the biologists on a hike on the beach looking for marine turtles laying eggs. From July/August until October/November we are able to release new born turtles on their way to the ocean. Marine Turtles
Marine turtles have lived in the oceans for over 100 million years. Although sea turtles live most of their lives in the ocean, adult females must return to beaches on land to lay their eggs. They often migrate long distances between foraging grounds and nesting beaches. Of the seven species of marine turtles in the world, four occur in the transparent waters of the Yucatan Peninsula:
- Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta)
- Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas)
- Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricate
- Leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea)
Turtle Season
Every year from June to September these endangered marine turtles come to lay their eggs in the white sand beaches of the Mexican Caribbean coasts. This is an unique opportunity to witness this amazing sight!
