Tour Option 1

Full day bird watching tour to Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve

Let us take you to the most beautiful and pristine Biosphere Reserve of the region; Rio Lagartos. Birding lovers will be amazed with the number and variety of exotic species that can be found in this amazingly beautiful location, home of the largest population of pink flamingos of the peninsula. Spot local endemic species as Ocellated Turkey, Yucatan Poor Will, Red Vented Woodpecker or the Yucatan flycatcher. Among the non-endemic species you can also encounter during this journey are the Wood Stork, Jabiru, Olive throated Parakeet, Brown Pelican, Ibis and Blue Winged Teal just to name a few of the more than 370 species found in the boundaries of this magnificent reserve.

The tour starts at 5 am when we pick you up from your hotel. You will enjoy the ride to the reserve, admiring the changes in vegetation and the quaint little Mayan villages along the way. Fall in love with the charm of Rio Lagartos, a fisherman village on the coast with narrow streets, colorful little houses and boats.

You will meet your specialist bird watching guide upon arrival to the reserve. A board a small shaded boat you will explore the remote parts of the Rio Lagartos estuary on a 4 to 5 hour birding tour. Our expert birding guide will help you to find and interact with the different coastal birds that populate the mangroves and lagoons. Admire species such as Bare Throated Tiger Heron, Reddish Egret, Roseate Spoonbill, Osprey, American White Pelican and of course the spectacular scenery of flocks of Greater Flamingos that have chosen this area as nesting grounds.

After the boat ride it is time for a break. Enjoy the beautiful coastal spectacle while you delight with an appetizing fresh sea food lunch in a charming local restaurant. Tasty food, friendly atmosphere and pink flamingos that can appear anywhere!

At the end of the day we will bring you back to your hotel.

  • Both bird outings were very good. Transportation services were excellent. Both Luis and Elmer know their birds! Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate for the Rio Lagartos boating segment and it had to be cut short as decided by Liz and I. During our two week stay with only the two bird outings, I managed to see 129 species of which 79 were lifers. I’m sure this would have been higher if it didn’t rain so hard and for so long on that one day. Liz and I were disappointed to not see a Roseate Spoonbill, but now we have a reason to go back!
Thanks for arranging the excellent bird tours.
    Sincerely Bruce and Liz

  • The bird guide at Rio Lagartos was outstanding and we have never seen so many species in one day.

  • The birding was great, and the guide was fabulous....he knew his birds, was very helpful and friendly, and also a true expert, in that he knew his birds by their sound.

  • We had a wonderful time, and very rewarding birding experience. I still can't believe I was able to see 10 endemics (if one includes the black throated bobwhite) in just one and a half days of birding, and about 115 species altogether. Our guides Elmer (Nov 8) and Ismael (Nov 9) were very helpful and very knowledgeable, and helped us see far more birds than we would have otherwise seen just on our own. Our driver, Salvador, was also very helpful and accommodating and we enjoyed his lively company during the long drives.
The only mis-communication we experienced was that Elmer was not aware that we wished to concentrate on endemics in the Ria Lagartos area, and had planned a day-long boat trip. We decided that we were unlikely to see species like the Yucatan woodpecker, Yucatan Wren, and Black-throated Bobwhite on the boat, so Elmer was resourceful and flexible enough to change plans quickly and split the day between land birding in the area in the morning and boat birding after lunch, which we very much appreciated.
In all, we had a lovely time and productive birding. I will be sure to recommend your services to all my birding friends. sincerely, Susan, California.

  • I had a great birdwatching trip and really loved Rio Lagartos. The driver was very good, and prompt in the morning. Elmir the birding guide was awesome, I wish I could have birded a lot more with him, the time went so quickly. He really knew his birds and worked very hard to get the endemics for me. As it turned out, the other couple on the tour were not avid birdwatchers and did not have binoculars with them, but despite that Elmir worked very hard for me. I got a number of first time "lifer" birds and was thrilled. The only down fall is the long drive back at the end of the day, was exhausted but so worth it. Thank You.
