The Yucatan Peninsula is home to thousands of species of flora and fauna, inhabiting various terrains and natural habitats. Large land areas are covered by unexplored rainforest that hides many secrets – Mayan ruins, animals, flowers and vegetation.

The majority of the land is still untouched by civilization, which gives the traveler a unique opportunity to feel at one with nature and observe animals, birds, reptiles and insects in their natural environment. Eco-tours are very popular in this part of the world because of the untouched natural environment and the large reserves, housing thousands of unique creatures.

When it comes to striking wildlife, Mexico is one of the most blessed countries in the world. Home to some of the rarest species of animals, the tropical forests of Mexico provides shelter to many indigenous land and marine animals.

The Mexican wildlife includes bears, wolves, monkeys, snakes, iguanas, and tapirs; all wandering around the forest day and night. Mexico's tourist attractions also includes beautiful aquatic scenery and fascinating coral reeves for divers. Tourists and travelers can enjoy spending time marveling over the most splendid water animals like whales, sharks, turtles, and swordfishes. Giant manta rays with over fifteen foot wing span and friendly dolphins can also be seen outside the surf line of Santiago Bay, this attracting thousands of vacationers from around the world.

In 1990 about half of the Petén department was protected under the Maya Biosphere Reserve. The Reserve was created to protect the largest area of tropical forest remaining in Central America. The other half was leftunprotected, as an economical resource for local communities

When I first came to live in the Petén in 1997 about 1 third of the unprotected rainforest had disappeared. Nevertheless, with 2 thirds still standing plus the immense Mayan Biosphere Reserve being protected, we were living in the middle of a vast area of seemingly endless rainforest with a few spots of slashed forest that had made way to agricultural land.

The Mirador Basin is a geographically-defined elevated basin of 2,169 square kilometers found in the remote rainforest of the Maya Biosphere Reserve in the northern department of Petén, Guatemala. The basin is named after El Mirador, which is an immense archaeological site within the basin.

The region is part of the last large area of intact tropical forest in Mesoamerica. Together with the reserves of Tikal National Park, the eastern Petén and the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in southern Mexico, the Mirador Basin represents the last refuge of tropical flora and fauna in Central America, creating an area large enough to guarantee the survival of threatened species.

Many active travelers come to Mexico for the Mayan, Aztec, Olmec, ruins. Many come for the beaches of Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, the snorkeling in Cozumel, the Colors of Mexico City, the jungles of Quintana Roo, or perhaps even the rich cooking of the entire country. A number of travelers even come windsurf, whale watch and hike. But not many come to take part in one of Mexico’s greatest gifts, whitewater rafting.

In the state of Veracruz lies the country’s best whitewater rafting destination. Boasting more than 40 rivers that spread across the dynamic terrain in Veracruz, it doesn’t take much to understand why this state would have ideal world-class white water rafting and kayaking. The typical river in Veracruz accents narrow, steep water flow that has a medium to low water volume making rafting and other water sports a challenging and technical experience.

The Mayan Jungle, a perfect destination for adventure travel with her unique nature and culture.

In 1996 I first came in touch with the jungle. Traveling through Central America, our adventure travel had taken me and two friends from Costa Rica to Guatemala. Arriving to Guatemala I decided to stay there and live in a small village in the middle of the jungle. Together with five Guatemalans I ran an ecological camping near Lake Petén Itzá. What else could I ask for?
