We spend a night in the Tikal National Park and explore its famous Mayan ruins and then embark on a 2-day camping adventure that takes us deeper into the jungle to the remote Mayan site, "Nakum" by bicycle or horseback. At the end of the tour we climb the tallest pyramid in Yaxha, Guatemala to enjoy a gorgeous scene of the sun setting over two jungle lakes.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Flight Cancun – Flores. Transfer from Flores to Tikal. Stay at hotel in Tikal.

Day 2: Guided tour of Tikal, transfer to Yaxha, night walk, camp at Lake Yaxha.

Day 3: Cycle or horseback riding* to Nakum, visit ruins in Nakum, camp at Nakum.

Day 4: Cycle or horseback riding* to Yaxha, visit ruins in Yaxha, stay at eco-lodge.

Day 5: Transfer to Flores Airport, flight back to Cancun.

Day 1

Adventure Travel We fly from Cancun international airport to Flores, Guatemala where you will meet your guide upon arrival. Private transportation will take us to Tikal National Park where we stay at the Jaguar Inn for the night. This hotel is just a minute's walk away from the entrance of the Tikal archeological site. Spending the night inside the Tikal National Park allows us to see the park at sunset and sunrise; an unforgettable experience of beautiful colors and abundant wild life.

Day 2

eco tourism The day begins with a fascinating guided tour of the Tikal ruins and National Park. We climb Tikal's highest pyramids to enjoy spectacular views over the vast Mayan jungle. Atop these temples and within the park, we’re given the opportunity to see an abundance of exotic wildlife such as toucans, coatis and monkeys. In the afternoon private transportation takes us to Yaxha, Guatemala; the starting point of our bicycle adventure (with optional horseback riding*) for the next day. Yaxha has a comfortable campsite by the banks of its lake. We camp here and enjoy delicious local meals. At night we invite you to enjoy a guided night walk to explore nocturnal flora and fauna.

Day 3

Off Road Bicycle Tours Today we follow a jungle road hiking trails that lead us 17 km (11 miles) deeper into the jungle en route to another archaeological site, Nakum, Guatemala. For those that have off-road cycling experience this is a very enjoyable and challenging ride*. Another option is horseback riding (no experience needed) to reach this amazing destination. After arriving to Nakum's beautiful campsite we explore the remote Mayan ruins hidden deep inside its protected jungle. Few people ever reach this ancient Mayan site where, to this day, excavations still continue.

Day 4

Mayan Pyramids We leave Nakum and ride our bicycles or horses back to Yaxha to take a refreshing break at the lake before exploring the tall Mayan temples. Climbing Yaxha’s highest temple at the end of the day rewards you with a breathtaking sunset view over the lakes and jungle of the Yaxha National Park.

We climb down and spend the night at the comfortable eco-lodge, "El Sombrero"

Day 5

Hiking Trails We debrief and accompany you to Flores airport for your return flight to Cancun.

*Off-road cycling
option available during dry season and when road conditions allow this activity. When roads are too muddy for cycling, horseback riding or hiking will be the alternative

To book the jungle tour of your choice, click on Book Now, open, fill in the form and click submit. You will receive an automatic confirmation of your booking request by email. Then wait for us to confirm availability and make your payment.

Yes! To be able to assist you in case of an emergency travel insurance is a mandatory requirement to come on our tours. The policy should cover medical expenses and emergency repatriation as a minimum. It is wise to have it cover personal liability and loss of luggage as well. Make sure the policy you purchase is suitable for adventure travel and camping and sports activities such as hiking, bicycling and flat water canoeing. On the first day of the tour, your Duende guide will ask you for the policy number and a 24 hour helpline telephone number provided by your insurance company.

You should budget about 15 to 25 US dollars a day for food and drinks (meals are usually included while camping). Border fees typically add up to 40 US dollars. Then there are expenses that vary from person to person; you will probably want to buy souvenirs, but it is of course up to you how much you spend. Other expenses that you can expect on your jungle tour are laundry (average 5 US dollars per week) and tipping. Additionally, we recommend you have access to at least 1000 US dollar for cases of emergency, for example with an ATM card. It is extremely rare to need medical service or an emergency flight home, but it is a comforting feeling to be prepared. Insurance companies will usually ask you to pay in advance and reimburse you after you return home.

In which form should I bring money?

Cash US dollars are easy to change in the Mundo Maya, but it is not recommendable to carry more then 300 USD cash. Damaged bills or bills bigger then 100 USD are difficult to use. Travelers’ cheques are also quite easy to exchange and this is a safe way of carrying money. Make sure your cheques are in US dollars, and no bigger then 100 dollars each. American Express are most common and therefore easiest to exchange.

Credit cards can be very useful to access money, but while on tour you will often find yourself in remote places without cash machines. In the Riviera Maya of Mexico there are plenty ATMs. Visa cards are widely accepted, but some machines will also recognize Mastercard, Cirrus or Maestro. Before departure make sure you check with your bank that your credit card is accepted in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize.

Try to pack as light as possible, you will be carrying your backpack on and off buses and sometimes you will have to walk a few miles with your pack to a hotel, camping area or bus station. Also bring a strong daypack for adventure travel, big enough to carry a change of clothes, food and water for a day, rain clothing and other personal belongings. 25 litres is big enough for a daypack. We recommend you have a rain cover for both your regular backpack and your day backpack. If not, make sure to pack everything in plastic bags, so your belongings don’t get wet if it rains!

Other items you should bring:

- Valid passport with photocopies.
- If required, visas for Mexico, Belize and Guatemala.
- Money (cash USD, travelers’ cheques, credit card).
- Travel insurance.
- Airline tickets.
- Sleeping bag for the tropics.
- Flashlight.
- Pocket knife.
- Alarm clock.
- Towel.
- Minimal clothes: 1 pair of long pants/trousers, 1 pair of shorts, 2 T-shirts, 1 long- sleeved shirt, 1 sweater.
- Head protection (bandana, cap, hat).
- Sun block.
- Personal toiletries and medicines.*
- Insect repellent for the tropics.
- Sneakers/trainers.
- Sandals that can get wet.
- Swimming clothes.
- Rain clothing.

* Note: for legal reasons your guides are not allowed to give you any form of medication; please make sure you bring some Aspirin or other pain killers and Imodium or something similar for diarrhoea.
