Day 1

Tikal Guatemala

We can pick you up from Flores, Guatemala -town or airport- at your arrival time. (You can fly to Flores from anywhere in the world with a connecting flight through Guatemala City - we can help you find your best flight deals!) From Flores, private transportation will take you to the Tikal National Park where we stay at the Jaguar Inn hotel for the night. This hotel is just a minute's walk away from the entrance of the Tikal archeological site. Spending the night in Tikal National Park allows us to see the park at sunset and sunrise; an unforgettable experience of beautiful colors and abundant wild life.

Day 2ecotourism

We begin day two with a fascinating guided tour of the Tikal ruins and National Park in the morning. Aside from climbing the tallest temples in Tikal, we’ll also have a chance to see exotic wildlife like toucans, coatis and monkeys. In the afternoon we will leave the park and head towards El Remate, Guatemala. This ecotourism village is situated on the shores of Lake Petén Itzá. We’ll get into our bathing suits and swim in the lake's transparent, turquoise waters! We’ll also meet some of the local woodcarvers who dedicate themselves to this wonderful forest-saving art. Then we end the day by indulging in delicious cuisine at one of the local restaurants. And what community experience would be complete without a night in genuine typical limestone cabañas.

Day 3

Overseas adventure travel

Off-road vehicles will take us deeper into the jungle to a small jungle village called "Paso Caballos". Here, we will set off in canoes, paddling our way down the Rio San Pedro. This calm river is surrounded by jungle and leads us into the National Park Laguna del Tigre. After two and a half hours of canoeing we arrive to the Biological Research Station where we set up camp. This comfortable campsite has cold showers, bathrooms and a kitchen area where we cook our meals on wood fires and mingle with the local forest protectors of the research station.

Day 4

Mayan Ruins Today is dedicated to exploring the jungle with its wildlife and visiting the archeological site of El Peru. From the campsite we canoe for an hour to the dock of El Peru. From here we will follow the hiking trails two hours to reach the hidden Mayan ruins of El Peru. These very exclusive ruins are unreachable by road and only seen by a handful of people each year. One of the highlights of the pristine forest surrounding the ruins is the very rare and endangered Scarlet Macaw. There are less than 150 breeding pairs of these beautiful parrots left between Mexico and Guatemala and here chances are big of seeing them in their natural habitat. At the end of the day we will return to the campsite to enjoy the delicious campfire meals and relax.

Day 5

Horseback riding

We canoe back up the San Pedro River and reach Paso Caballos village in 2 1/2 hours. We leave the village in off-road vehicles that take us back to Flores where the tour ends at around 4 pm.

Tip: adding an extra camping day in the jungle will give you more time for wildlife watching, canoeing and exploring this amazing destination!

To book the jungle tour of your choice, click on Book Now, open, fill in the form and click submit. You will receive an automatic confirmation of your booking request by email. Then wait for us to confirm availability and make your payment.

Yes! To be able to assist you in case of an emergency travel insurance is a mandatory requirement to come on our tours. The policy should cover medical expenses and emergency repatriation as a minimum. It is wise to have it cover personal liability and loss of luggage as well. Make sure the policy you purchase is suitable for adventure travel and camping and sports activities such as hiking, bicycling and flat water canoeing. On the first day of the tour, your Duende guide will ask you for the policy number and a 24 hour helpline telephone number provided by your insurance company.

You should budget about 15 to 25 US dollars a day for food and drinks (meals are usually included while camping). Border fees typically add up to 40 US dollars. Then there are expenses that vary from person to person; you will probably want to buy souvenirs, but it is of course up to you how much you spend. Other expenses that you can expect on your jungle tour are laundry (average 5 US dollars per week) and tipping. Additionally, we recommend you have access to at least 1000 US dollar for cases of emergency, for example with an ATM card. It is extremely rare to need medical service or an emergency flight home, but it is a comforting feeling to be prepared. Insurance companies will usually ask you to pay in advance and reimburse you after you return home.

In which form should I bring money?

Cash US dollars are easy to change in the Mundo Maya, but it is not recommendable to carry more then 300 USD cash. Damaged bills or bills bigger then 100 USD are difficult to use. Travelers’ cheques are also quite easy to exchange and this is a safe way of carrying money. Make sure your cheques are in US dollars, and no bigger then 100 dollars each. American Express are most common and therefore easiest to exchange.

Credit cards can be very useful to access money, but while on tour you will often find yourself in remote places without cash machines. In the Riviera Maya of Mexico there are plenty ATMs. Visa cards are widely accepted, but some machines will also recognize Mastercard, Cirrus or Maestro. Before departure make sure you check with your bank that your credit card is accepted in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize.

Try to pack as light as possible, you will be carrying your backpack on and off buses and sometimes you will have to walk a few miles with your pack to a hotel, camping area or bus station. Also bring a strong daypack for adventure travel, big enough to carry a change of clothes, food and water for a day, rain clothing and other personal belongings. 25 litres is big enough for a daypack. We recommend you have a rain cover for both your regular backpack and your day backpack. If not, make sure to pack everything in plastic bags, so your belongings don’t get wet if it rains!

Other items you should bring:

- Valid passport with photocopies.
- If required, visas for Mexico, Belize and Guatemala.
- Money (cash USD, travelers’ cheques, credit card).
- Travel insurance.
- Airline tickets.
- Sleeping bag for the tropics.
