The Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave is the most impressive cave in Belize and the Maya Lowlands. This cave was a sacred place to the Maya who began using the entrance during the early classic period (300-600AD).
The most famous detail of the cave is the human remains of “The Crystal Maiden”, the skeleton of a young female whose bones have been completely covered by the natural crystallization of the cave.

The tour starts in the morning when you are being picked up from your hotel. Your expert Belizean guide, who is very experienced in speleological exploration, jungle survival and bush craft, will give you some background information on Belize history, flora and fauna.

After a one hour scenic drive you will come to the spot from where you continue on foot. You will hike for 40 minutes through the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve where you may see some of the most precious natural riches that Belize is famous for. The hike includes several river crossings and your expert guide will tell you all about the plant and animal life of the region. Upon arrival to the entrance of the cave you will take a break to freshen up, drink some water and listen to the instructions of your guide. You are being equipped with helmets and headlights, ready to enter the cave!

When you enter the ATM Cave you will be required to do some swimming and climbing. This is a predominantly wet cave with water levels ranging from ankle to chest height. You will wade through the cave for about an hour while the cave river system leads you through a labyrinth of chambers. You will than reach the cathedral-like main chamber, which is 350 meters in length and 50 meters in width. In this area you will spend an hour to an hour and a half admiring with great care the many skeletal remains and artifacts; both pottery and stone tools. Toward the back of this chamber you will climb a ladder to get to the chamber of the Stone Sepulcher where you will see the skeletal remains of the famed crystallized maiden.

You will then leave the cave to enjoy a picnic lunch at the entrance of the cave. We hike back through the jungle and drive back to your hotel where this amazing tour comes to an end.

Includes: Transportation, multilingual adventure guide, entrance fees, helmet and headlight, picnic lunch and drinking water.
