Meet The Duende Team

Duende Tours is a highly experienced local multi-sport adventure travel provider of ecologically and culturally-oriented tours in the rainforest of the Mayan World in Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. As an international team of Europeans, Americans, and Latin Americans, we have been able to integrate western travel needs and quality standards into a local culture with different living standards and understandings.

What differentiates us from other tour organizations is our philosophy about adventure travel. We prefer to think of our tours as personal journeys of reflection, fun, and learning. Our tours are directed towards individuals that are looking to push their physical, educational, and cultural limits just a little further whilst off the beaten path. In other words, our tours are made for active travelers, interested not only in nature, but in the unique and stimulating learning experience of sound eco-friendly and culturally-sensitive methods of travel.

Ismael: Born in Cuba.

Travels: Europe, Mexico and Central America

Languages: Spanish, French, English, basic Italian and German

Born in Havana, Cuba, Ismael comes from a family of sea biologist researchers. He treats adventure as a religion either in the air: paragliding, rappelling; on land: bicycling (as most Cubans do), or in water as a swimmer, devoted snorkeler or diver. He left his native homeland to start a new life in Mexico, where he has been living for the last 16 years. He received a degree in psychology and traveled some countries, gaining valuable field experience. His passion for traveling is just as much a way of life as his been his profession, embracing the rich and unique cultural differences he finds across his array of travels, working towards his dream of living in a just world of ecologically proactive people.

Octavio was born in Michoacán, Mexico. He left his hometown at the age of 18 to study in Guadalajara where he received his degree in journalism. Eager to avoid the traffic and crowds of big cities, he moved to Cozumel Island 8 years ago. Octavio likes to practice snorkeling, camping and biking as part of his routine. Lover of plants and animals, he divides his time between Morélia and Cozumel. This way he has the opportunity to travel through Mexico looking for new magical places that inspire his photography passion. On Cozumel Island he finds the peace and tranquility necessary to finish writing a cooking book that is still in the oven… Octavio used to work in public relations for a company serving tourism and nowadays collaborates with Duende Tours where he hopes to inspire people to travel with the purpose of taking care of all species on the planet.

He loves nature and would like to show everybody how wonderful a jungle walk can be. "Life in the city can make you forget about the nurturing qualities nature has. Nature can help you discover  things about yourself, you didn't know. When you find yourself surrounded by trees and animals you can take your time to reflect on things we forget about when we are living our busy city-lives. Duende Tours offers people a comfortable way to reach places that are unavailable for other travelers", he says.
